Moving to Ashland, VA

Located just 16 miles north of Richmond, Ashland is a town that is full of history and culture. Named after the Kentucky estate of Henry Clay, Ashland’s population has held at around 8,000 for the last 10 years. Ashland has grown over the last several decades and now encompasses over 7 square miles. That makes it one of the larger cities in Virginia in terms of land area. Moreover, Bloomberg Business once voted Ashland as “Best Place to Raise Your Kids.” In 2014, Ashland was also named one of the 10 best small towns in America by Movoto.com.

Ashland summers are considered hot and humid, with highs reaching around 90 degrees Fahrenheit. The winters are fairly mild but still cold, with lows reaching towards 20 degrees. The town features a strong economy, close-knit community, historical interest and attractive housing & neighborhoods. It is centered around Randolph-Macon College. The school was founded in 1830 and moved to Ashland in 1868 to take advantage of abandoned buildings from a bankrupt hotel.

A good place to start when moving to Ashland is the Ashland Visitor Center. It is located at the old Ashland train station and has all the information you need plus a museum of Ashland’s rich history. Grab the brochure for the self-guided walking tour and take in the beauty of this small American town.

Ashland has a variety of unique restaurants and coffee shops. Center Of The Universe Brewing Company has become a favorite amongst the locals. They feature a wide beer selection, food trucks, a well set up outside patio that is dog-friendly with live music. Iron Horse Restaurant and Jake’s Place are two other Ashland standouts.

If you’re looking for things to do in Ashland, there are plenty of options. Kings Dominion is a local amusement park that is open year-round. It features 12 world-class roller coasters and has fun and entertainment for all ages. The park especially dials it up for Halloween and Christmas celebrations. Cobb Theatre is a great place to go catch a musical or play put on by students at Randolph-Macon.

Speaking of Randolph-Macon College, the Keeble Observatory on campus opens itself to the public every Wednesday and during special celestial events. Like any good town, the Ashland Farmers Market offers great local produce selections, live music and the occasional food truck.

And we can’t forget about the Ashland Strawberry Faire. Only one day a year, the festival is held on the streets of RMC’s campus. With about 30,000 people attending every year, the Faire features more than 300 booths for non-profit groups. From outstanding food to unique antiques, it is always a day to remember in Ashland.

Hanover County Public Schools looks over the six Ashland public schools. Hanover Academy is a local private school that gets great reviews from the community as well. With it being a smaller community, the student-to-teacher ratio at the schools sits at 14.
